Every lesson is about YOU and your musical goals. In your first lesson, you'll learn how to set up your instrument (if playing a string instrument) and what proper playing posture looks like. You'll be introduced to music notation, and you'll be playing your first song by the end of the lesson. Every lesson going forward includes a personalized curriculum to help you reach your goals, constructive criticism to help you get better, practice strategies for further work at home, and practicing homework that you'll actually want to do. All genres of music are taught and can be part of your musical journey. Duets with your teacher and others are highly encouraged. There are also opportunities for composition and songwriting during your lessons if that is something you want to learn!
If it's your first music lesson EVER, all you need to bring is your instrument (if you have one). If you have some experience on your instrument already (at school or in other areas), you should come ready to demonstrate whatever you have been working on - but it doesn't need to be perfect! It will just give me an idea of what you've already learned and how I can best help you.
Learning to play an instrument is a workout for both the brain and the body. You need to develop your muscle memory to build technique, and you also need to think actively about the notes on the page and the decisions you want to make in order to perform comfortably and successfully. Music skills are accessible to everyone, but they do take time to develop - so it's important to practice as much as you realistically can, consistently. Some people can reliably practice 2-3 days a week, some people can reliably practice every day, some people can only practice once a week given their schedule. The more you practice the better you will get, but the most important thing is that it is consistent, so that your body and your brain have ample opportunity to internalize good technique and practice habits. When you practice regularly, you will hear your sound change, you will become fluent in musical notation, and you will become more confident in your ability to take on challenges.
It's important to emphasize that you cannot learn to play an instrument by only playing your instrument during a lesson. My job as a music teacher is to offer advice and guidance for your musical practice so that you can sound how you want to sound and play music that makes you happy - so in order for me to offer instruction that continues to be relevant and helpful, work does have to be done outside of the lesson setting. I have strategies to help build a practice routine, and I can help if you need assistance in starting a reliable practice routine.
Absolutely! If you are not interested in regular lessons but need assistance in preparing for an upcoming audition, I am more than happy to accomodate a few lessons for audition specific preparation and feedback. I regularly am an adjudicator for CMEA Regional and All-State festivals, so I am particularly familiar with the requirements and expectations of these auditions.
I have experience teaching students as young as 6 years old, and I've taught adult students. On average, my students are aged 10-16.
I do! Lessons are available year-round, but if you prefer to take lessons during the summer or feel that would be more beneficial to your practice/budget, this can be accomodated!
